Convert AVIF, both directions
AVIF makes the smallest images of the common formats, and still meets software that refuses to open one. Kovert reads it and writes it, whole folders at a time, on your own machine.

Either direction, the same three moves
Drop the files in
AVIFs that need to open somewhere, or JPGs and PNGs that should shrink. Folders and zip archives both work.
Pick the output
JPG or PNG to make an AVIF ordinary. AVIF at the preset quality of 55 to go the other way.
Press convert
Every file lands next to its source with the original untouched, and the status bar totals what changed.
Where AVIF stands
AVIF comes from the AV1 video codec and beats WebP and JPEG on size at the same quality, by a wide margin on photos. Every major browser has opened it since early 2024.
Outside the browser it is patchier. Older photo viewers, office software and plenty of upload forms still refuse it, which is what the other direction of this page is for.
AVIF to JPG, for everything else
A download folder full of AVIFs opens nowhere on an older Windows install. Converted to JPG the same images open everywhere, and converted to PNG they keep their transparency.
Windows can learn to show AVIF with a Store extension. The point of converting is not needing to care.
JPG to AVIF, for the web
The web images preset writes WebP, and switching its output to AVIF is one dropdown. Quality 55 sounds low and is not: the AVIF scale is not the JPEG scale, and it holds detail at settings where JPEG falls apart.
Encoding AVIF is slower than WebP, noticeably so on big batches. A large folder is a coffee, not an afternoon, and it runs on your machine either way.
Questions
- Why will Windows not open my AVIF file?
- Photos wants an AV1 extension from the Store, and older apps never learn at all. Converting to JPG sidesteps the whole question.
- AVIF or WebP for a website?
- AVIF is smaller, WebP writes faster and opens in more tools. WebP is never wrong, AVIF saves a little more when your pipeline and visitors handle it.
- Does AVIF keep transparency?
- Yes, in both directions. An AVIF with an alpha channel converts to PNG intact, and a transparent PNG becomes a transparent AVIF.
- Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
- A little, as every re-encode does. At the JPEG preset of 82 you will struggle to find it, and the original stays on disk.
- Is it free?
- At home, yes, every feature. Converting for work runs on a €49 seat, one time.
